Ph.D. Programme in Management at IIM Nagpur consists of 6 different areas of specialization of Management. It prepares students to pursue a career, which requires high scholastic aptitude and academic research. The programme is primarily designed to help students seek research careers in academia or elsewhere.

It is a newly launched programme at IIM Nagpur and therefore, there is no average estimate available due to the lack of any data. However, the typical completion time is expected to be between four and five years.

Students/professionals who want to pursue a career in advanced research and academics (including teaching) are the ideal candidates for this program. The applicant should have the high academic ability, aptitude for research, and excellent analytical skills. He/She should have enough motivation to withstand the rigor of the program.

They are expected to complete course work, pass a comprehensive exam, and publish quality research of an international standard. Most importantly, while working on the aforementioned items, they should follow a continuous everlasting inquisitive approach of questioning, researching, analyzing, reporting, and publishing.

The doctoral program is very rigorous. It needs a very high degree of academic commitment and integrity. It has stringent requirements at every stage of the program. Candidates who fail to match the criteria may be asked to leave the program.

You do not want to spend more than four-five years doing doctoral work while you can accomplish your career goals by doing a one to two years MBA Program.

Students are awarded the degree of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ (Ph.D.) in the student’s area of specialization.

The Programme looks for highly motivated and disciplined candidates with strong academic preparation who exhibit curiosity, a desire to learn, and have an inclination towards high levels of specialized research.

Not really. From the first year itself, the student takes Ph.D. level courses along with some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Advisor. Hence, a student coming from a non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Program in Management brochure for specific requirements. For example, the POM area encourages students who have quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with an interest/background in Psychology may find the Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Management area interesting.

Yes, you can apply for the programme. However, if selected, you will be provisionally admitted till you furnish all the documents satisfying the eligibility criteria. The deadline for submitting the final year documents is 31st December of the year of admission.

There is no upper age limit to applying for the Ph.D. Programme.

If you have secured at least 60% or equivalent marks, you do not have to take CAT. You can apply directly through the online process. Otherwise, you have to take CAT or GMAT.

The application form can be filled online. Application fee of Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 1500/- for applying in two areas) can be paid through the IIM Nagpur payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination scorecard along with the application. The qualifying exams are: Scores on standardized tests (CAT / GMAT)

You can apply for a maximum of two areas of specialization at a time.

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as those for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details regarding the same.

Based on the information provided by the applicants, candidates will be shortlisted and called for personal interviews. Candidates will be admitted to the program based on multiple parameters, as specified by the respective areas.
Parameters may include the applicant’s performance in either CAT or GMAT score (as applicable), past academic performance, work experience, area-specific written test and/ or interview performance, etc.

Scores of CAT 2019 and 2020 will be considered valid for application to the Ph.D. Programme in 2021. GMAT Score will be considered valid for a period of two years from the date of taking the exam.
PGP (Full-time) alumni of any IIM who have graduated in or after 2018 will get a waiver from appearing for CAT/GMAT provided they have graduated with at least 60% or equivalent marks.

Yes, the letter of recommendation is mandatory. Along with the online application, the applicant has to furnish the details of the referees. Once submitted, the referees will receive an email with the details, where they have to provide the recommendation online. No hard copy of the recommendation is accepted/needed.

Usually, a faculty member from the last institute attended can write a recommendation for students. For working professionals, it could be the superior of the candidate, who can elaborate on his/her research capabilities, can write letters of recommendation.

An industry expert who knows you or a fellow professional can write a recommendation for you.

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of a specialized area in the programme. It also allows the candidate to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal, but it is desirable to have some idea about the research domain.

IIM Nagpur provides fellowship (including fees, boarding, and stipend) for four years to doctoral students.

Residing inside the campus is compulsory. However, in exceptional circumstances, waivers may be considered.

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigor and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The principles of natural justice are followed in each such case.

The key stages are 1. First-year coursework (Ph.D. Programme Compulsory courses, Area Ph.D. Courses, and some recommended PGP course/s), 2. Second-year coursework in the area of high levels of specialization, 3. Area comprehensive examination, 4. Thesis Proposal defense, 5. Thesis seminar, and 6. Thesis defense

A research topic requires the interest and motivation of the student and the availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of a high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Dissertation Advisory Committee (DAC) with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Yes, the research work can be interdisciplinary in nature.

No, but they are required to assist faculty members in teaching and research for a minimum time duration.

IIM Nagpur offers full support for attending up to three domestic conferences and one international conference during the course of the programme.

You can apply to two areas but must mention your first preference in your application. Once a student is admitted in an area, only rarely do we allow the student to change the area.

Participants will get the following monthly stipend during the duration of the program.
Year 1 and 2: INR 30,000

Year 3 and 4: INR 33,000 (to be initiated upon successful completion of comprehensive examination)

The stipend is subject to periodic reviews and will be stopped upon receiving an adverse review by the programme EC or after the candidate could not pass the comprehensive examination within the stipulated time. Stipend is provided a maximum of up to 4 years or graduation, whichever happens earlier.

The application fee is INR 1000 for applying to a single area and INR 1,500 for applying to two areas. Please note that the application fee is not refundable.

For SC, ST, and PWD candidates will be given a 50% concession in the application fee. Please note that the application fee is not refundable.
