Prof. Deeparghya Mukherjee’s research paper entitled ‘Make in India for the World?—A study of the effects of industrial and trade policy on the Indian transport equipment sector’ has been published in the Journal of Social and Economic Development. This research explores the enmeshed effects of industrial and trade policies on the export potential of sectors in a world of trade through integration in global value chains (GVCs). By taking a deeper look at the motor vehicles and transport equipment sectors of India that have been impacted by multiple government policies between 2016 and 2020, namely, (a) FAME 1, (2) GST, and (3) increased tariff duties on intermediates, the research finds that the interventions together may have different effects on exports and imports of the transport equipment sector of India split by intermediates and final products trade. The research also uncovers effects of the policies on India’s contribution to foreign final demand, along with exclusive effects in trade with FTA partners in light of the stated policy interventions.
