IIM Nagpur director launches Prof Rath’s book ‘Corporate Governance in the 21st Century’Feb 3, 2023

Nagpur | February 2: Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director IIM Nagpur, released the book ‘Corporate Governance in the 21st Century’ authored by Prof. Arun Kumar Rath, Chairman Centre of Excellence for Corporate Governance CSR & Sustainability – CGCS, on February 1, 2023. The book launch programme was organized by IIM Nagpur in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence for Corporate Governance, CSR & Sustainability (CGCS).

Prof. Rath is an adjunct professor in strategy and entrepreneurship at IIM Nagpur. Dr. Rath, a distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the All India Management Association, New Delhi, has published several research articles on corporate Governance, CSR, and sustainability.

While briefing about the book Prof. Rath said, “The book is an outcome of my interactions at three different levels – first my participation in the decision-making process in the boardrooms, second, my training sessions for directors and executives of companies, both for Indian and global participants, and third, my classroom interactions with management students in leading business schools.” These interactions at different levels prompted me to write a book focusing exclusively on comprehensive corporate Governance and social responsibility.

The book ‘Corporate Governance in the 21st Century’ is a comprehensive account of the theory and practice of corporate Governance, covering both the global and Indian scenarios. It analyses the perspective of Corporate Governance in the 21st century and provides recommendations for effective corporate Governance. The book will be helpful for faculty members, students, research scholars, corporate directors, managers, and policymakers engaged in the study and practice of corporate Governance, Prof. Rath informed.

“This book is the need of the hour. In this digital world, disruptions happen at a very high speed; competition is very stiff. In such changing conditions, corporate Governance plays an important role. Many companies have encountered problems due to bad corporate Governance. That is why this book plays a significant role,” insisted Dr. Metri. Each chapter of this book gives insight into good Governance. He added that it is a handling guide for those who want to be proactive in good Governance.

Reviewing the book, Prof. Rajeev Aggarwal, an Adjunct Professor at IIM Nagpur in the Production and Operations Management area, said, “This book grabbed my attention with its simplistic commentary on corporate Governance, people, and their management. Prof. Rath has elaborately discussed the Enron scandal in this book.”

Dr. Magesh Nagarajan, Professor and IIM Nagpur Library Chairperson, said, “There are not many books that bridge the gap in Governance (Corporate and Public) as seen by academia and practitioners. What can be better than a book from a successful bureaucrat? This book’s unique selling point is its focus on Governance structure, the composition of the Board, theories related to it (Agency theory and Stakeholder perspectives), and how the Governance model has evolved.”

While reviewing the book, Prof. Deepmala Baghel, faculty in Humanities, Arts, And Social Sciences area, said that the book provided a crisp conceptual understanding of today’s corporate Governance, practices, challenges, and solutions scenario.
Appreciating Prof. Rath’s writings, Dr. Prashant Gupta, faculty in Finance & Accounting at IIM Nagpur, said that the book provided basic definitions, details, and the role of Corporate Governance and future challenges.

“I believe that the students will realize the importance of this book when they join the corporate world and need authentic information on practices in corporate governance,” said Prof Alok Kumar Singh, faculty in Production & Operations Management area.
Dr. Metri also launched the new library resource search tool on the occasion.
