IIM Nagpur in association with SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) organised a live concert of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan on Monday, February 11th, 2019. Pandit Mithilesh Jha on the tabla accompanied Ustad Shahid Parvez, who played the Sitar. A Padma Shri awardee felicitated with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Music, Ustad Shahid Parvez belongs to the seventh generation of the Etawah Gharana.
The concert was aimed towards enlightening IIM Nagpur students with the rich heritage of Indian classical music. To grace the occasion, IIM Nagpur Director Prof L S Murty and other eminent faculty members were also present. Prof Murty along with Ustad Shahid Parvez and Pandit Mithilesh Jha lit the ceremonial lamp. Prof Murty said that in the last four years of inception, IIM Nagpur campus has scaled up to conduct a concert of such a prestigious stature. He was followed by the institute chairperson Prof Deeparghya Mukherjee, who talked about the soulfulness that classical music can bring to the rigorous lives of students at a B-school.
Ustad Shahid Parvez acquainted the audience with the various genres of music, along with the many ragas and pitch amplifications that he plays on the sitar. He further talked about how he was introduced to music by his father, and he idolised his uncle as a Sitar player. He also talked about his long association with Pandit Mithilesh. Ustad Ji followed up with his memoirs of shows where he had Ustad Zakir Hussain on the tabla.
IIM Nagpur students were enthralled by Ustad Shahid Parvez’s rendition of popular ragas such as Raag Bhoopali, Raag Jog and other prominent ragas of Shringar-Rasa. The entire event was coordinated and executed by the Cultural club of IIM Nagpur along with extended support from the IIM Nagpur’s Media & PR Club.
