Field Immersion Module
The Field Immersion Module at the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur was envisioned as an opportunity for MBA students to interact with the industry. Not only does the module expose students to the actual day-to-day functioning of an organization, but it also allows them to apply managerial know-how that they learn in their classes, to real-life issues.

The Process
A mandatory segment for all first-year students, FIM is positioned between the students’ second and third terms during their MBA. At this point, the students are equipped with the fundamentals of accounting, finance, strategy, marketing, human resource management and entrepreneurship, and possess the skills to analyze organizational scenarios head-on.
Students are attached to participating organizations from four broad sectors:

  • Government and Infrastructure
  • Industry and Business (Small and Medium Enterprises)
  • Agriculture, Food Processing and Rural Development and
  • NGO and Environmental Management

field-immersion Representatives from participating organizations interact with the students during the Field Immersion Orientation Week, to offer the students an overview of the various sectors and provide them with a context for their immersion. The sessions could also help the students identify specific questions and learning projects to work on. This is followed by a three-week segment wherein students work with the organizations full-time on the identified issues. At the end of the three-week module, the students present their learnings to the organizations, as well as at the Institute. These presentations are evaluated and the awarded grades are incorporated into the calculation of their final GPAs.

Our Partners
The mission that guides IIM Nagpur is Engaged Scholarship, upheld by high quality education, op quality research, and multi-pronged industry engagement. True to this commitment, we ensure that the experiential element of our curriculum exposes students to as diverse organizational environments as are actionable. While students intern with corporate enterprises in the traditional summer internship at the end of the first year, the FIM acquaints them with the organizational challenges of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the not-for-profit sector.
Over the years, we have partnered with a number of undertakings across sectors for the Field Immersion Module. The module has grown from 31 partners in the Nagpur district in 2015-16, to 61 in 2019-20. It has also moved beyond Nagpur to include adjoining districts of Wardha, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, as well as Aurangabad, the manufacturing hub of Maharashtra; and Nashik, the center of the food and agriculture sector in the state.

Industry Speak
Knowledge transfer at the Institute takes place with the objective of making a tangible impact on the world outside the classroom. Therefore, the students undergoing the FIM are expected to provide actionable solutions to tackle the management questions they are assigned at their respective organizations.
It is a testament to the commitment to excellence that IIMN students strive for, that the FIM has resulted in some fairly quantifiable benefits for our partner organizations:
