IIM Nagpur training students to become job creators not job seekers: Honourable President of India Shri Ram Nath KovindMay 8, 2022

NAGPUR: Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM Nagpur) is proving to be the cradle for young minds capable of becoming job creators instead of job seekers, said Honourable President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind while inaugurating the new campus of IIM Nagpur, MIHAN on Sunday morning. This institute is not just an academic training ground but a life moulding experience for the students, he felt.

Shri Kovind unveiled the plaque to officially inaugurate the new campus of IIM Nagpur. He, along with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Education, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Industries & Mining Shri Subhash Desai, Energy Minister and Guardian Minister Shri Nitin Raut, Leader of the Opposition Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Shri Devendra Fadnavis, MP Shri Krupal Tumane and MP Dr Vikas Mahatme were taken on a tour to view the campus and various facilities. Director IIM Nagpur Dr Bhimaraya Metri explained the details of the project to honourable President on the occasion.

Highlighting the changing trends, Shri Kovind pointed out that we were living in an era where innovation, entrepreneurship was appreciated and encouraged. New sectors are coming under the loop of business enterprises. Unexplored territories like education, health have also become part of these new enterprises. Such forays can be game changers for our country, he said. It can be a combination of job provider and revenue earner for our people. Both, innovation and entrepreneurship have the ability to ease out our lives through technology and can also provide employment opportunities to many people, he added.

Shri Kovind was all praise for the work done by IIMN Foundation for Entrepreneurship Development (InFED) in the sector of women entrepreneurship. Such platforms provide an effective platform for women empowerment, he said. “I am delighted to see that IIM Nagpur has started taking steps towards encouraging innovation. It has also assumed the responsibility of regional innovation organizer which works as a business incubator providing support services for innovation and entrepreneurship,” he added. Such ventures will take us towards Atma Nirbhar Bharat, he said.

The very fact that IIIM Nagpur bagged the prestigious GRIHA 4 Star LD award is a pointer to the fact that the institute is committed to the cause of environment, he pointed out. The students here are not the makers of their own destiny but of our country and the entire world, he added. Shri Kovind warned the students not to forget the ethics of our country while venturing out into the big world.

Shri Gadkari said that the IIM Nagpur was providing top class education in a state-of-art campus. He was all praise for the IIM Nagpur team for developing such a beautiful campus. It was our dream to turn Nagpur into an educational, logistic and medical hub, he said. In the coming years many renowned companies will be investing in the region. Falcon jet will also be manufactured in Nagpur by this year end, he informed. We are starting work on Nagpur to Vijaywada and Nagpur to Hyderabad controlled-access highway project worth Rs 40,000 crore. This will connect the region well with the Southern state, he informed. IIM Nagpur will be a huge help in taking the region to a different level in case of turning it into a global medical, educational and logistic hub. I am confident that IIM Nagpur will give the youths of the region a new perspective towards life and prosperity, he added.

“Inauguration of the new campus of IIM Nagpur today is an apt tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his 161st birth anniversary,” said Shri Pradhan. I am happy to see that IIM Nagpur is visibly playing an important role in implementing the new education policy which aims at creating global leaders, he added.

“The entire world is looking at us as an emerging economy particularly after the pandemic. In such a scenario, the responsibility of institutes like IIM Nagpur increases manifold,” he felt. Education is primarily meant for empowerment. Knowledge based empowerment helps an individual progress from poverty to prosperity, he said. Though initially, education was focused on employability, now with the new education policy, we want more of job providers, entrepreneurs. I am confident that in the coming times, IIM Nagpur will assume the role of job creator, he added.

Advising the students to adopt a shift in their line of thinking, Shri Pradhan said, “Instead of weighing how big is the pay package, think about how many could be employed by you.” We have around 25 crore youth in India with education infrastructure sufficient only for 11 crore. We need to thing about providing good education facilities to the remaining 14 crore youth, he urged. “As IIM Nagpur sets up new campus, it should also adopt new practices of social commitment,” he advised. He urged IIM Nagpur alumni to actively participate and contribute towards the institute where they studied. IIM Nagpur should adopt a school in the most backward region, help revive it, send students to teach there during summer holidays and thus inculcate the ethics of social responsibility, he urged.

Shri Desai said that IIM Nagpur was enriching itself by striking partnership with global institutes. I am happy to tell you that chief minister Shri Uddhav Thackarey has promised to extend complete co-operation to the institute. IIM Nagpur is providing huge support and training to many startups. Such a perfect combination of education and entrepreneurship will help the state and country attain higher goals, he felt.

While appreciating the new IIM Nagpur campus, Shri Fadnavis said that as per the new education policy we want to create global leaders in human resources. The idea of new Bharat is being actualized by institutes like IIM Nagpur. With iconic institutes like IIM Nagpur, AIIMS, IIIT, National Law School being established in Nagpur, the city is turning into an education hub.

Industry investments come in where there are human resources available. There can’t be any compromise on quality of human resources. With quality resources, we can attract global interests, he felt.

At the outset Shri C P Gurnani, Chairman IIM Nagpur Board of Governors, welcomed the dignitaries and introduced them to the activities of IIM Nagpur. Shri Vaibhav Dange, Building Committee Chairman and BoG member, was also present on the occasion. A military band played various tunes during the inaugural ceremony.
